Hello!

Over the years, Wednesdays have turned into Big Days for Tin Shingle. It used to be that it rained every Wednesday, making for a gloomy day. Then it began snowing every Wednesday, causing School Closures which make live production of Tin Shingle's TuneUps hard. Once Remote Learning started, Wednesday became the day that was the Longest Day for Katie's kids, where they had several online class meetings in one day, which required constant snack-prep and technical support.

And for the latest Wednesday hurdle...Katie learned that her husband had COVID on a Wednesday, which threw everything out of orbit. Katie also learned that she and her middle son had COVID, and she wrote about it at A Little Beacon Blog, and in her newspaper column for the Highlands Current, at their request.

Thankfully, her household is on the other side of it (we think...for now...the hunt for antibodies begins), and for this Wednesday, the Office Hours are Open for Tin Shingle Members.

This is a time to turn on your video camera to speak eye-to-eye, or just talk on the phone or through your computer speakers.

In this series, members of Tin Shingle with the Media Kit Membership can call in to workshop any need in their marketing campaign, including:

  • Media Pitching: What a pitch to a certain media outlet should look like, and how it should read.

  • Instagram: How to get sales and create PR opportunities from you posts.

  • Facebook: How do you increase traffic from this platform?

  • Website Design: The media will circle back to evaluate their website. What are they seeing, and is it clear?

  • SEO: What's your game plan? Let's get one. You don't want to miss out on all that search traffic.

HOW IT WORKS:
Tin Shingle's owner Katie will moderate the call.

She will rotate through people on the call, and encourage each other to contribute to each person's challenge as a conversation.

CALL-IN DETAILS
When you are logged into your Media Kit Member account at Tin Shingle, you will be able to click this link in our Community section of the website to get the private link to call in details.

Once on the call, Katie will adjust your settings so that we can hear and/or see you. We love talking face-to-face, so turn your video on if you want. Otherwise, audio-only is fine.

Today's Small Group Training Call...Plus How Vital Pet Life Benefited From Last Week's Training

Hello!
Today is Small Group Training time.

Last session we experienced a big breakthrough for one of the members on the call. Valerie Rice, Trend Analyst and Communications Director for Vital Pet Life, maker of Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil for pets, had just launched a press release, and wanted to brainstorm how to build off of it.

The breakthrough was this: the press release mentioned that the salmon oil is the only MSC Certified Sustainable available. There may be others to market in the future, but right now, according to Valerie, Vital Pet Life is the first to make the commitment and the investment.

That's amazing, but...what does "sustainable" really mean? Another member on the call had this question, as did Katie of Tin Shingle. This revealing question yielded several insights that Valerie can use in her pitching of the media, including:

  • Defining a buzz-word like "sustainable" is important in the pitch. There's a lot to it that makes the pitch even more enticing.

  • Educating in what "sustainable" means in general to different types of reporters is useful. Not everyone is well-versed in wellness. These can be spin-off pitches, where you have more reasons to email the media.

  • Remembering that not everyone knows everything. Another member on the call did not know about the benefits of salmon-oil to humans or dogs. This may be common-knowledge for some, but it's a good reminder for every business owner and PR specialist that not everyone knows everything, and there is still room to educate.

If you are a member of Tin Shingle, come on today's Members-Only TuneUp! These are closed sessions, and not open to the public. You can turn on your video camera to speak eye-to-eye, or just talk on the phone or through your computer speakers.

[PR] TuneUp: When Your Facebook Gets Compromised, Who Do You Call? And What Happens To Your Life And Business?

OMG, She Got Facebook Compromised And Lost Everything

Sabina Hitchen, a Public Relations Strategist & Expert, as well as an on-air TV personality for Wow-Worthy Small Biz Discoveries, had her Facebook compromised. Sabina runs part of her business coaching businesses about PR on Facebook in a Community Group. And let's not forget all of her new baby photos that she feeds her friends with daily.

When her Facebook account got hacked, she lost control of it and was unable to access her business Community Group or those baby pictures. Sabina is the former business partner and co-creator of Tin Shingle. She generously is pulling the curtain back to reveal her traumatic experience in order to help others avoid the same fate.

Change your passwords as often as you change your toothbrush! And that means that you must remember to change your toothbrush! Every 3 months is recommended.

Today we found out:

  • When it happened.

  • How she knew.

  • What she did right after.

  • If there was anyone to call.

  • No one to call? So who did she call?

  • What she has learned since.

  • The impact her Instagram.

  • If any other platforms, banks, emails, were impacted.

Sabina told us allllll about the dark web (well, as much as she learned), getting in touch with any facebook support, etc.

[PR] TuneUp: Interview With TV Writer and Creator Patty Carey

Interview With TV Writer and Creator Patty Carey

Patty Carey is one of New York City's most well known Location Managers for film and television, having location managed such films including The Greatest Showman, Rent, The Weather Man, Fantastic Four, Doctor Strange, Ted 2, 27 Dresses and others.

But 2018 was her breakout year when she wrote her first script, "Half Life," that won the first #GreenlightHer competition from New York City's Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment, which produced 5 episodes of the series.

"Half Life" takes a comedic look at a NYC mom trying to reboot her stalled screenwriting career without letting the rest of her life fall apart - moms can have a midlife crisis too.

In this TuneUp, we found out:

  • How Patty went from Location Managing to writing.

  • How she very quickly promoted the film to beat out 300 other writers.

  • What life was like behind the camera of her own show - versus someone else's.

  • Where Patty is now in her home life with her kids, and how Distance Learning is working its way into her already compromised career life.

  • What she is writing now - and if she gets blocked.

  • Where is she now and how she is staying relevant during this pandemic (hint: she's been clam digging...).

  • Where she sees film and TV going now during this pandemic, and if she sees hope for scripts getting picked up right now.
