Reddit Bans Hate Speech In Act Against 'The Donald' Subreddit

On Monday, June 29, Reddit finally decided to ban hate speech after a yearlong debate. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman announced that ‘The Donald’, home to 790,000 subscribers, has failed to “meet our most basic expectations.”

Reddit is known as one of the largest social networking and message board websites. The community or “subreddit,” called “The_Donald,” is known to share videos and messages in support of Donald Trump. Reddit executives said the group had consistently broken its rules by allowing people to target and harass others with hate speech.

“Reddit is a place for community and belonging, not for attacking people,” said Steve Huffman, the company’s chief executive. ‘‘The_Donald’ has been in violation of that.”

As part of a crackdown on hate speech, Reddit is also banning roughly 2,000 other political communities. Twitch, a video-game broadcasting and viewing platform, shared a few examples of "offending content" from Trump's account, including a campaign rally in 2016 and a recent campaign event in Tulsa, Oklahoma, both of which showed the president making racist comments about Mexican Americans.

Working From Home Just Got Way Cooler As Savannah Guthrie Returns Home - To Work For Today Show

savannah-guthrie-working-from-home-MAIN.png

The COVID-19 pandemic is opening our eyes to many things. One of them is working from home and being close to family. Granted, one can hardly work from home if there are small children around, but Savannah Guthrie’s decision to return to work from home - after self-quarantining herself after a coronavirus scare - is a testament to how working from home will become our new normal as the governors of this country band together to figure out our “new normal,” a term embraced by Rhode Island’s Governor, Gina Raimondo during today’s group teal-briefing with New York’s Governor Cuomo as he introduced the 6-governor task force to reopen the country. Oops! I mean region.

This an opportunity for all makeup artists, all stylists, all hair experts. You need to help her! Just kidding. She has her peeps of course, employed by the Today Show, to fix her up But this is the type of opportunity that experts in the beauty field can get creative in. What can you tell her for beauty tips? To make herself on-air ready if her hair and makeup crew isn’t going to come into her home?

  • False eyelashes: How to falsify the false eyelash when you can’t get to your stylist

  • Is having kids in the picture OK now in the time of coronavirus?

  • What’s your work/life schedule like when you need to hit a deadline - like going on air?

Read The Highlights At People.com

Tin Shingle’s beat reporter for the Today Show, Teslie Andrade, loved this article at People.com. There are a few highlights she wants you to read:

“After briefly returning to the studio last week, the newscaster anchored Monday’s broadcast of Today from home, explaining to her co-host Hoda Kotb that she wanted to be close to her family amid the coronavirus pandemic. Guthrie shares 3-year-old son Charley and 5-year-old daughter Vale with husband Michael Feldman.

“‘I’m home. You know, the reason, Hoda — my family is upstate, and so I’m sticking close to the family and coming to the city less and less,” said Guthrie, 48. “So I’m trying to work from home. And also, frankly, that’s what these officials are telling us to do, so that’s exactly what I’m going to do.’”

Savannah sets the scene at 30 Rock right now in the People article:

“Several other Today show stars are also working remotely, and in a new interview with Page Six, Kotb opened up about the strange experience of coming into the deserted office.

“‘The Today show is normally teeming with people. Even when I arrive, there are people outside 30 Rock waiting for the show to start — they’ve made trips to come see us. But [now] there’s literally not a soul outside,” she said. “I go into the studio and you can hear your footsteps echoing [because] there’s no one there.’”

Hoda Kotb shares what her in-studio experience is like:

“With no stylists or makeup artists, Kotb has been doing her own hair and makeup.

’“I do my hair with, like, a curling iron from the ’80s and really don’t lay eyes on anyone until Savannah pops up on the monitor,” she said.’”

So great. So honest. More of it!

Annnnd, She's Back! Savannah Guthrie Is Officially Back On Air At The Today Show

Annnnnnd she’s back! Savannah Guthrie is officially back on air alongside Hoda Kotb (6 feet away, of course). Savannah spent the last two weeks working from home with a sore throat and runny nose out of caution due to the coronavirus pandemic.

She said at the time she felt “good” but after an employee who works on The TODAY Show tested positive for coronavirus, Savannah erred on the side of caution.

Al Roker (weatherman & co-host of 3rd hour of today) and Craig Melvin (news anchor) are continuing to work entirely remotely. Both men had some contact with the employee who tested positive, however, they both feel good. Al is still delivering weather from his home and Craig is on air from home (sometimes letting his son joins!)

And, in light of recent events, Hoda announced on Monday that she and her boyfriend, Joel Schiffman, are engaged after six years together.

What else is happening on The TODAY Show?

  • Filing for unemployment.

  • Couples hoping to expand their families have been struggling with IVF cancellations amid the coronavirus pandemic.

  • Two cruise ships heading to Florida are experiencing roadblocks- desperate to dock".

Good Housekeeping Editor Moves To Woman's Day - Meaghan Murphy Replaces Susan Spencer

womans-day-good-housekeeping-editor-change-MAIN.png

Meaghan Murphy is the energetic and creative editor of the magazine Good Housekeeping, who has now moved to Woman’s Day. This is a move within the parent publishing company, Hearst, who owns both magazines. It’s common for editors to move around in magazines within a huge corporate publishing company, or to even take on additional magazines under their responsibility (sounds overwhelming to task one person with so many different ideas, but that’s the direction these big magazines have been going in).

Good Housekeeping has gone through a few redesigns, including one in 2012 and one in 2009. Might we look forward to a makeover at Woman’s Day? Currently the two publications are delivered together in a subscription package from parent company Hearst. Signing up right now!

About Meaghan Murphy

Her new title at Woman’s Day is “content director,” according to this article in the New York Post. Also in that article, she is said to replace Susan Spencer, who was the editor-in-chief of Woman’s Day, which the article calls an “old-fashioned” title. Bullocks!

Meaghan is an editor who doubles over into TV, with appearances where she gives household advice on shows including “Good Morning America,” “Live! with Kelly & Ryan” and “The Dr. Oz Show,” the latter of which is currently incorporated into the Woman’s Day magazine.

You might remember Meaghan as the deputy editor and fitness director of Self at Conde Nast before moving to Good Housekeeping in 2014, where, according to the New York Post article, she is credited with developing “strategic media partnerships with brands like Walmart, Kimberly Clark, General Mills and more.”

Safe to expect some sort of revenue inspired editorial coming out of Woman’s Day, if not only for a new direction from a fresh perspective.

For those who like a little inspiration and reasons to pursue small leads: Meaghan got her start at the one-time very popular teen magazine YM (now closed) after winning a national essay contest on overcoming adversity.

Stay With Susan Spencer

In a statement, Susan indicated where we might find her next: “It is time for me to pursue a new direction, one that I hope will allow me to continue to work to educate and empower women.”

Susan wrote a book, “When Action Follows Heart: 365 Ways to Share Kindness Every Day of the Year,” which grew out of the Kindness column in Woman’s Day.

One never knows where an editor will turn up next. Sometimes they become contributing writers, or one-time editors of special interest magazines that are sold at higher prices on the newsstands. Our advice here at Tin Shingle is to keep tabs on Susan, if women’s empowerment, health, and kindness are your beat. Keep her updated with your products and services. You never know when she might need to reference them.

Yeah...What She Says. Bobbi Brown Breaks Success Down In Plain Terms

Bobbi Brown Breaks It Down...It's Simple

Happy New Year!
Entrepreneur Magazine's Editor in Chief, Jason Feifer, interviews celebrities all of the time for their entrepreneurial side. He also talks to thousands of entrepreneurs a year through his job as editor of the magazine, speaker at events, and podcast host. This simple interview he had with cosmetics industry mega-star, Bobbi Brown, really hit home this holiday season, when you're evaluating how to move forward, and what to move forward.
Bobbi Brown, for those who don't know, started as a makeup artist. "I just wanted to make something that was better than what was on the market," she told Jason in this interview with him in the September 2019 issue of the magazine. The only advice she tells Jason that she got, was this: "The world doesn't need another cosmetics company. You don't know what you're doing."

Stop Right There...I Got To Know Right Now...

Have you heard this before from someone who loves you? Or from someone you barely know? Have you told yourself this?

Bobbi Brown's Top 5 Highlights

Everyone has their doubters, and their rules. Rules of how they think something should be done. Just remember to keep the faith and trust yourself in how something can work. Here are 5 highlights from Jason's interview with Bobbi that hopefully hit home with you:

HEAD DOWN
"OK, go home and just do it. Put your head down, figure out what it takes, and just do it. And if it doesn't work, then do it, but do it a little bit differently."

HEAD DOWN - BUT GET UP
This one is a funny contradiction, but you'll get the point: "Stop putting your head down in your computer. At least once a day, raise your head, get some fresh air, and talk to people."

ENTREPRENEURS LOVE MAKING THINGS
"You know, you just make this up. An entrepreneur really is just someone who makes things up and likes to get them done."

FAILURE
"I'm not afraid of failure. If something doesn't work out, I look at it and say, 'OK. That was fun. That was interesting. This is why it didn't work.' Because I always like to learn from it."

CONFIDENCE
The only thing confidence is, is being comfortable in your skin. I'm comfortable to make mistakes. I'm comfortable to admit what I don't know. I just think it's interesting not knowing things, so long as you're not afraid to ask questions and say, 'Wait; what do you mean?'"

High Times Magazine At High Times Holding May Burn Out

high times dank.jpg

According to an article at the New York Post, High Times Holdings, the publishers of High Times Magazine, is facing financial burden from debts it holds from investments. High Times also owns rival magazines Dope, Culture and Green Rush Daily.

According to the article: “Its crowdsourced IPO has stalled. It recently hired Toronto-based Lazer & Lazer to search for a new backer as it tries to dig out of $105.2 million in debts. In its most recent earnings report, Hightimes Holding incurred a net loss of $11.9 million for the 6 months ended June 30, 2019, on revenue of $10.7.”

in its latest SEC filing to shareholders, the company said: “Because of recurring operating losses, net operating cash flow deficits, and an accumulated deficit, there is substantial doubt about the company’s ability to continue as a going concern for one year from the issuance of the financial statements.”

High Times Holding is controlled by Adam Levin’s Oreva Capital, according to this New York Post article.

Tin Shingle wrote about High Times earlier this year.

Money Magazine Goes Out Of Print - Kiplinger's Buys Money's Subscription List

money-magazine-kiplingers-personal-finance-MAIN.png

Money magazine goes out of print, with the last issue being July/July 2019. Money magazine was acquired by Meredith in January 2018 in the major deal with Time, Inc. According to this New York Post article, Meredith’s intentions were to sell off titles such as this one, as they did with Time magazine (sold to Salesforce founder and his wife), and Fortune magazine (sold to a Thai businessman), but could not find a buyer for Money.

Instead, Meredith has retained the Money brand and will continue the website in digital, and has sold a large portion of the print subscriber list to Kiplinger’s magazine, one of the few personal finance magazines in print. According to MediaPost, Kiplinger’s already had subscriber overlap with Money, so bought a portion of the subscriber list, bringing Kiplinger’s subscriber base up to 920,000.

While you may have just lost a print edition bible of Best Places To Retire, Best Colleges, Best Retirement Cities, and so on, there are so many digital publications and podcasts that people value, such as HerMoney from Jean Chatzky. And just because a major publisher took it out of print doesn’t mean Money magazine should have been put to pasture. Says the Meredith’s chief executive at the time in this New York Times article: “We love these brands and think they have great audiences,” Tom Harty, Meredith’s chief executive, said in an interview. But, he continued, “Our main portfolio that we built over time at Meredith has been focused on a different audience type.”

  • Dentist: Do people often forget to use their dental insurance by the end of the year? Do you know if they are wasting hundreds of dollars? Pitch it.
