Money Magazine Goes Out Of Print - Kiplinger's Buys Money's Subscription List

money-magazine-kiplingers-personal-finance-MAIN.png

Money magazine goes out of print, with the last issue being July/July 2019. Money magazine was acquired by Meredith in January 2018 in the major deal with Time, Inc. According to this New York Post article, Meredith’s intentions were to sell off titles such as this one, as they did with Time magazine (sold to Salesforce founder and his wife), and Fortune magazine (sold to a Thai businessman), but could not find a buyer for Money.

Instead, Meredith has retained the Money brand and will continue the website in digital, and has sold a large portion of the print subscriber list to Kiplinger’s magazine, one of the few personal finance magazines in print. According to MediaPost, Kiplinger’s already had subscriber overlap with Money, so bought a portion of the subscriber list, bringing Kiplinger’s subscriber base up to 920,000.

While you may have just lost a print edition bible of Best Places To Retire, Best Colleges, Best Retirement Cities, and so on, there are so many digital publications and podcasts that people value, such as HerMoney from Jean Chatzky. And just because a major publisher took it out of print doesn’t mean Money magazine should have been put to pasture. Says the Meredith’s chief executive at the time in this New York Times article: “We love these brands and think they have great audiences,” Tom Harty, Meredith’s chief executive, said in an interview. But, he continued, “Our main portfolio that we built over time at Meredith has been focused on a different audience type.”

What Businesses Should Pitch Money Stuff?

Really, any business can. You just need to think of a money angle. Use Tin Shingle's Community to help you get ideas from others if you need them. For example:

  • Insurance Company: Do you know of a trend going on with people and health insurance lately? Are they making choices based on financial changes in their homes? Pitch this.

  • Fashion: Do you know of a trend where people are renting their entire wardrobe lately? From bags to dresses? Can you piggy back this as a trend story onto major department store brands such as Forever 21 talking bankruptcy? Figure out an angle where your business can be mentioned, and pitch it.

  • Dentist: Do people often forget to use their dental insurance by the end of the year? Do you know if they are wasting hundreds of dollars? Pitch it.

How Tin Shingle’s Media Contacts Can Help

Looking for more content creators and media outlets for your personal finance pitches? When you use Tin Shingle’s Media Contact Library, you can type in a search term like “Personal Finance” and get recommendations of reporters, writers who produce content in that field. You’ll get ideas for the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Crain’s, and even some business institutions like banks who also have content platforms. Pitching a business platform should be in your content strategy, as it’s a feature with lower competition, but one that could land you a nice online feature.

We are adding Kiplinger's Personal Finance to our Editorial Calendar Collection, since it is a print magazine. That research is currently being done, and will be updated in our database soon.

Join Tin Shingle today for access to our library, and to our online Community where you can bounce ideas off of us before you pitch the media with your amazing angle.

Money Monday: Proceed To The Route

money monday proceed to the route.png

When In Doubt…

Sometimes on a Monday, you get a message that knocks you off course.

That message might scare you. Freeze you. Capture you in doubt.

You made your list the night before, or hour before, and you knew what you were doing, but now you don’t.

For the rock that just rolled in front of you, blocking you from seeing the bright side of the goal you were moving towards, all you can see now are these questions:

  • Is it the right thing?

  • Will you succeed?

  • Will you earn enough money?

  • Maybe this isn’t the plan. Maybe you should drop it and pick a different plan.

Proceed To The Route.

You’ve made your game-plan 100 times.

You know what to do.

You know why you need to do it.

This is the part where you roll the rock away - or go around it - and proceed to the route.

Most of the time in life, you don’t know what is on the other side of your route.

You don't know how it's going to turn out. How the rules you think you know will change - in your favor. How you will get offers or ideas of different ways of doing things to make your dream possible.

This is the fun part of business. If you have faith in what you are doing, the solution of how to get what you need will present itself, and you may never have imagined it.

You think you know all of the answers, how everything will turn out, but you won’t. Surprise developments, re-routes and other unexpecteds will present themselves, usually paving the way for all to succeed.

When in doubt, proceed to the route, and keep going. Have faith.

Happy Monday. :)

Wanderlust! Editorial Calendar Themes For Elite Traveler, Sunset, and Alaska Beyond

This week’s update to Tin Shingle’s exclusive Editorial Calendar Collection includes new publications serving the world traveler. Remember, these are simply the Editorial Calendars for these publications. Tin Shingle’s Media Contact Library will have more ideas and inspirations for you to pitch. In our Media Contact Library, you can search by “travel” or “adventure” for instance, and get search results of people who work for travel and adventure publications.

About Our Editorial Calendar Collection

The magazines provide their media kits and editorial calendars to us for the upcoming year. For those publications that haven’t yet released them, we have studied the editorial patterns of the previous years. If there is consistency the broad theme, then we are able to make a prediction. For example, if Alaska Beyond’s March Issue focused on “Hawaii” for the past two years, we can confidently predict that in March of 2020, “Hawaii” will also be the focus.

Despite all of this, the most important information you have are the publication and submission dates through 2020. This enables you to ascertain the production cycle of a particular magazine so you can effectively pitch a story angle relevant to the season. Knowing the broad theme does help, but the publication and submission dates are THE gold nuggets. Think ahead and think big!

Elite Traveler

Also known as the “private jet lifestyle magazine,” Elite traveler has been a global lifestyle brand, curating the best hotels, restaurants, fashion, and jewelry. Their audience includes the ultra-rich and those of high net worth.

EDITORIAL CALENDAR PLANNING FOR NOW: Best of Hotels, The Luxury Edit

EDITORIAL CALENDAR PLANNING FOR NOW: The Camping Issue, Food and Wine

In Tin Shingle's exclusive monthly TuneUp series, "What To Pitch The Media This Month," we zero in on what you should be focusing on right now for your PR and Social Media campaign planning. This is especially important for those of you who want to get featured in national magazines. We will cover what you could be pitching for:

  • Magazines (in print) (story ideas relevant for 6 months from now)

  • Blogs / Podcasts (story ideas relevant for 1 week to 2 months out)

  • TV (story ideas relevant for 1 week to 2 months outt

  • NEW! Seasonal (photo shoots dependent upon weather)

BONUS! We are having a Special Guest in for this TuneUp! The former publisher of the magazine Traditional Home, Beth McDonough, will give us a Pop-Up Publisher Exclusive view of what magazines are working on now.

Sneak peek of what she'll be telling us: "Most of the national books (aka magazines) will be focusing on finishing up their Holiday issues and turning their attention to next year. Think about seasonal stories for 2020 (yes a year out) for titles that will be looking for Holiday themes that they will need when the weather is cooperative."

Want to learn more about what she means? Join us live on today's broadcast!

New Editorial Calendars, Featuring African American Publications

In this update to Tin Shingle’s exclusive Editorial Calendar Collection, we have added new publications (new to our collection, but established in the publishing world!) catering to the African American audience.

Keep in mind, these are only Editorial Calendars. There are more media ideas for you to pitch to in Tin Shingle’s Media Contact Library. We have devoted a research project to #blackmedia to make sure we have the publications (digital and print) that people have been loving and have made big impacts on their lives. In our Media Contact Library, you can search by “Black Media” or “African American” for instance, and get search results of people who work for publications who identify with that niche.

About Our Editorial Calendar Collection

For all of our Editorial Calendars, we either get them from the magazine for the upcoming year, or if it hasn’t been released yet (but they still know the themes), we do our scientific study of researching the past 2 years of what that magazine published. If we see consistency in the broad theme, then we make a prediction. For example, if Essence Magazine did “Women In Business” in October for the past 2 years, then we predict that to be the broad theme again for 2020.

However, the utmost important tool you have access to is the publication and submission date through 2020. You are able to determine where a magazine is in their production cycle so you can pitch them a timely story angle. There are SO MANY ideas you can pitch. Knowing the broad theme is helpful, but not the most important aspect to your pitching. Think big! Think broadly!

Happy Money Monday! The Power Of Growth

money monday growth.png

Happy Money Monday!

This Money Monday Message is dedicated to the primary caregivers in the house - the moms and dads whose businesses took a hit (or let's be honest - a nosedive) when the first kid came along. Your income may have tanked, or you may have done your best to maintain the status quo, and stay afloat - doing the day to day to keep those numbers the same.

Keep Looking At Those QuickBooks Reports

As you grow your kid-legs (aka sea legs), things get easier. Because you have less time to f*around making excuses for bad client behavior or lack of pitching for new business, you begin to tighten things up in your business department (or you threw in the towel completely, but since you're a reader of Tin Shingle, you're probably back in the game - YAY YOU!).

Look at your Gross year over year. If you take a salary, look at that year over year. If the number is low, that might be depressing to you. If that number has stayed the same, you have some work to do.

If That Number Has Grown...

But if that number has grown...if you took a salary of $6,000 one year, and $24,000 the next year, well that's some pretty impressive growth right there. While $24,000 in and of itself is far from the 6-digit number you’re going for, you can look at your percentage of growth and know that if you grew the business that much, you can spread your wings and do more.

PS: QuickBooks Has Helped With This Salary Growth

While this is not a sponsorship by QuickBooks (though we are channeling a partnership and do want them in our scheduled sponsor content for you), using QuickBook's Payroll at the full level has helped enormously with the cutting of payroll checks. The first payroll company we used was an old-school company that charged a big fee just to have it, plus a $45 fee to cut a check, and then a $99 fee to cut a check, and then a big old $157 fee for not cutting any checks at all during a quarter.

Having payroll even for just 1 employee has been helpful for avoiding incorrectly estimating taxes. But the favorite part is how easy it is to cut a payroll check any day of the week - even if it is sooner than the regular payday. If you need money now from your business, you don’t need to call 1-800-CASH-NOW, you can just cut a payroll check and have the money go where it needs to for taxes.

How can you not pay yourself as a business owner? Well, as a business owner, you may have another job, a supporting spouse, gifts allotted to you, dividend income, who knows. This has been written about before on Tin Shingle, the Crutch Syndrome, and you should go re-read it if you need a mindset shift in growing profitability in your business.

Meanwhile, have a great Money Monday, and go shake those money trees!
