Is The Facebook Ad Boycott Still Happening? And Should It Be Forever?

During the past week, more than 500 companies, like The North Face and Rei, joined the campaign of boycotting Facebook ads with the intent of placing pressure on Facebook to take a stronger stance against hate speech.

The current boycott is like nothing Facebook has experienced before. The Anti-Defamation League launched a #StopHateForProfit campaign asking companies to stop their advertising. “Let’s send Facebook a powerful message: Your profits will never be worth promoting hate, bigotry, racism, antisemitism and violence,” the campaign’s site reads. Hundreds of companies joined in. “When we re-engage will depend on Facebook’s response,” Levi Strauss CMO Jen Sey wrote in a blog post.

This began in June after advocacy groups and others began pushing for Facebook to refrain from sharing hateful content such as ads featuring nazi symbols from President Donald Trump and white nationalist content from Red Ice TV. More specifically, calls were spurred by posts from President Trump responding to the demonstrations against police brutality and the death of George Floyd, including one in which he suggested the “THUGS” protesting should be shot.

Owner & Co-Founder, Katie James, shared that,

“Facebook Ads have long been censored. The reason that they state is that the content is too controversial or divisive. In my experience, this has been for an inter-faith group meeting after a church received white supremacy flyers posted onto their church in October 2017, and most recently, an article about Beacon’s Mayor giving his decision about moving a memorial bench. Both were declined to be paid.

So for Facebook to say that they are not into censorship is false. They do censor. And they should censor. All media publications should and do censor. One cannot possibly publish everything, so natural censorship happens all of the time when left on the cutting room floor. But to not censor hate speech of the president of the United States is bias and wrong. Clearly they support it, if they will not censor it.”

Tin Shingle has always advocated not to put all of your eggs into one basket. Right now, Facebook is not only controlling the levers with which you can reach people, but it is developing the feeling of a bad taste in your mouth. They’ve had that stigma for years, but their recent lack of censorship added to the amount of frustration that people unleash on that platform, leaves it all gross. Do you really want your brand to be there?

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told employees: "My guess is that all of these advertisers will be back on the platform soon enough," according to The Information.

Friends of Tin Shingle Who Sell Face Masks

As we enter the period of reopening, people are anxious to get back to normal life, however, we must keep in mind that social distancing and safety measures are still in effect. For the foreseeable future, we are required to wear face masks when social distancing and safety measures are hard to do. Like, going to the grocery store, post office, etc. As we phase into restaurant dining, store openings, etc., you might be coming out of your house more which means, you’re going to need a lot of different face masks! An easy solution is to keep a face covering in your car(s), in your purse, on your key rack, etc. You may have already noticed the new dice hanging above the dashboard in cars - yup - it’s the face mask.

For many years, plain white face masks have been worn in China. A little crazy that they never became a fashion statement! Nowadays, masks must match outfits, right? During this pandemic crisis, the CDC has issued new guidelines that relax the fabric and construction requirements of a traditional medical mask for a person wearing a face covering in a socially distanced situation out in public. The CDC and the Surgeon General of the United States of America even allow bandanas or T-shirt material folded in a special way and secured with rubber bands around the ears.

Not only can we wear stylish face coverings, we can buy them from an army of makers, including friends of Tin Shingle! Below is a list of Tin Shingle’s mask makers.

Please note, these coverings and masks are not medical grade. Use CDC guidelines and use FDA-approved items if possible and these only as a last resort. These products have not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. These masks are not an N95 Respirator. Use these products at your own risk.

A Passing: Irina Mozyleva Siegel, Founder of ClothFactor

Irina Mozyleva Siegel. Photo Credit: Irina Mozyleva Siegel.

Irina Mozyleva Siegel first came to Tin Shingle when a friend recommended her, when she created and opened ClothFactor. She was looking for confidence in speaking in social media, to get the word out about what she was making in her studio in The Lofts At Beacon, in Beacon, NY. Irina was from Miory, in the Vitebsk Region of Belarus, then part of the Soviet Union. She passed on May 27, 2020 from a rare cancer that she sought to “outwit,” in part with her business, ClothFactor. She was 51.

Irina started sewing at a young age, learning from her sister Tamara, a professional seamstress, but grew into her voice when she was “plucked by State talent scouts and placed in a dedicated musical boarding school where students worked at their instruments and voices for hours every day,” according to her obituary. She pursued a singing career which eventually won her an all expenses paid trip to America to Julliard, when she sent the school a cassette of her singing.

According to her obituary in the Beacon Free Press dated June 17, 2020, Irina “transferred to the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, having won a full scholarship there. After graduation, she went on to join the Merola Opera Program, which traveled the country performing fully staged operas. She moved to New York, where in 1997, after a magical, musical, and international courtship, she married Aryeh Siegel - twice. She gave birth to their daughter, Leah, on New Year’s Eve 1999 a few days after they moved to Beacon, NY.”

Irina continued to pursue her singing career locally in Beacon, and tapped into her Russian Orthodox Church roots to keep her sound going. She developed a very rare cancer for which there was no cure, and her body began a battle between the cancer and pain caused by medication. Irina lost the ability to sing like she used to.

To cope with the pain, Irina tapped back into her stitching roots. Her sewing skills had became proficient while she was an opera student at Moscow Conservatory and made both her costumes and her own clothes, according to her About Us page on her website. Irina continued doing alterations for clothing, including those for her petite height. Her daughter, Leah, inherited her singing voice, and was quite active in the high school drama department. Irina started creating costumes for her daughter and the theater department, and her passion for the cloth was strengthened.

Irina came to Tin Shingle when she wanted to get the word out about the ClothFactor. I spoke to her about her desires to use social media, and her hesitation with writing. Irina was an eager learner, and would play TuneUp replays when in her studio. I learned of her cancer later from a friend. Irina did not mention it to me. After a couple years of membership, I reached out to her friend to inquire for Irina’s health. If Irina had kept it to herself, I didn’t want to intrude. I learned that her cancer was not improving, and that she was battling hard.

ClothFactor was what she started to help her fight past her physical pain. “In 2016, after losing the ability to sing due to radical surgery, Irina immediately redirected her creativity to clothing design, opening ClothFactor, a retail sewing studio that she ran next door to her home at the Lofts at Beacon. She grew the business successfully for a couple of years, which made her even happier than singing and satisfied her deep creative urge. It also gave her time and a place to be alone with her illness. Irina never liked to see herself in a “battle;” she viewed her rare cancer more as a sly opponent to outwit.

Creating costumes for drama students at her daughter, Leah’s, school, Beacon High School, reignited her desire to design new clothes. She worked with two talented women in her studio. From the ClothFactor website, we lift up these women to recognize them as Irina did her her words:

Irina (right) working with her team, Teresa Murray (left) and Debbie Roberts (middle).

Irina (right) working with her team, Teresa Murray (left) and Debbie Roberts (middle).

Deborah (Debbie) Roberts, “a professional seamstress with extensive sewing machine knowledge and expertise. She is a sought-after machine embroidery professional and is invited to do classes and demonstrations at many workshops and markets throughout the year. Her resume includes work for Calvin Klein and behind the scenes on TV’s “Extreme Home Makeovers.” Debbie has studied with both Sandra Betzina and Sue Hausmann, two leading sewing experts. For the last fifteen years she has been a salesperson and educator at Sew & Vac in Poughkeepsie, NY.”

“Teresa Murray is a highly experienced seamstress with unparalleled skills, Teresa is an integral part of the ClothFactor team. Her thoughtful attention to detail results in gorgeous, precise tailoring. She is a patient, thorough, and gifted craftswoman who can handle complex patterns and techniques. Her warmth and enthusiasm paired with her expertise and top-notch skills make her an ideal person to work with on these very personal projects.”

Those who are loving and missing her are her husband and architect, Aryeh Siegel, and their daughter Leah Siegel. Her father Nicolai Petrovich Mozyleva residing in Belarus, her sister Tamara also in Belarus, and her many friends around the world. Irina joins her mother, Lia Mozyleva, who passed in 2009.

Irina was also a music teacher, teaching in local schools and giving private lessons in piano and voice. Her family asks that you consider donating to the Solaris Voices Scholarship Fund for Musical Education, which benefits students in Beacon, NY. Checks can b e made to Solaris Voices, with Irina Mozyleva Siegel in the memo section, and mailed to 42 Mason Circle, Beacon, NY 12508.

CBS News' Washington Bureau Chief, Chris isham, Is Stepping Down

After nearly 13 years as Washington Bureau Chief, Chris Isham has stepped down to become the executive producer of political coverage. After the election, “Chris will be moving on to write his next chapter,” CBS News president Susan Zirinsky writes.

As of July 6, Ingrid Ciprian-Matthews, former network executive VP, will become the acting bureau chief.

CBS News also announced that Lorna Jones will be promoted to deputy bureau chief for the Washington bureau. Jones was the managing editor for nearly 2 years and has been part of the CBS news’ D.C. bureau since 2015.

Ward Sloane, current deputy bureau, will take on a new role to be announced soon.

Read Zirinsky's memo below.

Today we are announcing a number of changes to the Washington Bureau. Chris Isham is stepping down as Bureau Chief to take on the role of Executive Producer of Political Coverage through the election. Post-election, Chris will be moving on to write his next chapter.

We thank him for his commitment to quality journalism and his 13 years as the Washington Bureau Chief.

We will begin a transition process immediately that gives us the time to maintain our competitiveness at a most challenging time.

Ingrid Ciprian-Matthews will be the Acting Washington Bureau Chief running day-to-day operations and she will be leading the search for our next Washington Bureau Chief along with Kim Godwin, me and support from HR.

Ward Sloane, who has spent almost his entire adult life working at the CBS News Washington Bureau, will be moving into a new role which we will be announcing soon.

I am very pleased today to announce that Lorna Jones will be promoted from her role as Managing Editor to Deputy Bureau Chief for the Washington Bureau. Lorna has been in the Washington Bureau since 2015. She began working at CBS News at 48 Hours in 2001. She has a strong editorial and operational background having been the Weekend News manager for the National desk prior to moving to Washington.

Ingrid and Lorna will assume their new roles officially on July 6th.

I want to acknowledge that the productivity and performance of the Washington Bureau has been outstanding - highly competitive and exceptional, meeting the challenges of these chaotic times. CBS has been out front covering Covid-19 and the watershed events in the aftermath of the tragic death of George Floyd, as the country confronts the systemic and historic racism and the abusive policing in America. I am truly proud of this bureau’s journalism.

Ingrid will be reaching out to many of you for your input as we take this opportunity to evolve our organization. She wants to hear from you.

There is much more to do. And I look forward to a seamless transition -- all of us working together - to take this bureau to new heights.

Trump Campaign Ads Removed From Facebook After Features Of "Nazi Hate Symbol"

A few weeks ago, Facebook reported that they had taken action against ads run by President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign. The ads featured an upside down red triangle, a symbol described as “Dangerous MOBS of far-left groups”, once used by Nazis to identify political prisoners.

The post on the Team Trump Facebook page shared the message, “Dangerous MOBS of far-left groups are running through our streets and causing absolute mayhem. They are destroying our cities and rioting — it’s absolute madness.”

Andy Stone, a Facebook spokesman, said, “We removed these posts and ads for violating our policy against organized hate,” “Our policy prohibits using a banned hate group’s symbol to identify political prisoners without the context that condemns or discusses the symbol.”

The ads were used to attack antifa, calling on Trump supporters to back the President's calls to assign the group a terrorist organization. “Please add your name IMMEDIATELY to stand with your President and his decision to declare ANTIFA a Terrorist Organization.”

A spokesperson for the Trump campaign responded to criticism of the ad earlier Thursday, and told The Washington Post that “the red triangle is an Antifa symbol.” The ADL said that some antifa activists have used the symbol, but it is not particularly common.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was criticized last month for not taking action on a Trump post that said "looting" leads to "shooting," amid racial unrest across the country. In a related article HERE, Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan say they are "disgusted" by President Donald Trump's remarks on the nationwide protests against racial injustice.

Ronna McDaniel, the chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, compared the use of the symbol to those seen everyday, including yield signs and in cable network stock tickers. She wrote on Twitter that Facebook’s decision was “insane.”
