Pitch This: The Mother's Day Gift Guide Ideas You Should Pitch In November

mothers-day-gift-guide-ideas-november-MAIN.png

During our last PR challenge meeting, we refined a pitching angle for one of the Tin Shingle Media Members who has big goals and a long list of magazines they want to pitch. The easiest way to write a good pitch is to pick 1 magazine at a time, pick it apart for openings, and pitch it.

Through this process, we realized that the Tin Shingler had not one, but TWO pitching opportunities right now - in November - to hit. Working with our Time Zones approach, which is when we realize that even though it’s winter right now, magazines are working on spring, we were thinking two approaches:

  • Timely: What time of year is it that the editorial team is working on? This PR Challenge meeting was in mid-November, so we were thinking April. We looked at Tin Shingle’s Editorial Calendar Collection for magazine they were targeting - Shape. We reviewed Shape’s broad theme for May, and started chewing on a good story angle. We reviewed Shape’s broad theme for May, and started chewing on a good story angle. Keep in mind, this is not the same Time Zone that TV, Blogs, Weekly and Regional Magazines are working on. Pitching Mother's Day would be too early.

  • Gift Guide! "Great Scott!" Katie cried, during the PR Challenge call. "It's Mother's Day Gift Guide Pitching Season! You have 2 opportunities right now!"

What Are The Next Steps For This Business?

Now the Communications Director and the Business Owner of this business had two homework assignments:

  1. Pitch Shape for the story angle we discussed, or that they have brainstormed.

  2. Pitch other magazines for Mothers Day Gift Guide ideas!

Which brings us to this article for you: You've got homework too. Pitching those Mothers Day Gift Guides! If there are any still open.

You're not going to blanket pitch (aka sending 1 pitch to the same 20 outlets). No no no. You are going to specialize each of these Gift Guide Ideas for the right magazine.

Example: You wouldn’t pitch the same Gift Guide idea to Bust that you would to Shape (if either of those usually even has a Mothers Day Gift Guide).

How You're Going To Pitch Mother's Day:

  • Listen to the Tin Shingle TuneUp on it. Media Members get to stream it for free any time.

  • Listen to another Tin Shingle TuneUp about writing an amazing pitch.

  • Think of a really catchy Gift Guide theme. Yeah, that's right! Pitch the really cool idea of a theme you have!

  • Make that pitch really short. Quick intro, followed by bullet points about your product.

  • Pick 1 product. Not your entire line, or your entire company at large.

  • Don't leave it for the editor to dig through your website to find the perfect gift idea. Be on point. Deliver it to them.

Here are 15 Mothers Day Gift Guide Ideas for you to take and use!

We Interrupt This Reguarly Scheduled TuneUp For...Editorial Calendar Season

Hello!

We interrupt this regular Wednesday schedule of TuneUps to tell you that the research team here at Tin Shingle is having an exciting planning meeting about bringing you Editorial Calendars from magazines for 2020.

October and November is Editorial Calendar Season for us here at Tin Shingle. During the course of the year, we research back 2 years to predict the following monthly topics for magazines who tend to not make their broad-theme editorial calendars public until it's too late for you to pitch editorial.

For those magazines who do make public their actual editorial calendars for the following year, that would happen now. Our Editorial Calendar Researcher, Yvonne, has been hard at work sleuthing for these, and is delivering her findings at today's meeting.

Maybe, just maybe, we'll turn on an InstaStory and tell you about it in person. So watch our Instagram for that. Otherwise, watch this newsletter space and our Blog for announcements to which new Editorial Calendars have been published to the PR Center for business owners, artists and makers with Media Memberships to Tin Shingle.

New Editorial Calendars, Featuring African American Publications

In this update to Tin Shingle’s exclusive Editorial Calendar Collection, we have added new publications (new to our collection, but established in the publishing world!) catering to the African American audience.

Keep in mind, these are only Editorial Calendars. There are more media ideas for you to pitch to in Tin Shingle’s Media Contact Library. We have devoted a research project to #blackmedia to make sure we have the publications (digital and print) that people have been loving and have made big impacts on their lives. In our Media Contact Library, you can search by “Black Media” or “African American” for instance, and get search results of people who work for publications who identify with that niche.

About Our Editorial Calendar Collection

For all of our Editorial Calendars, we either get them from the magazine for the upcoming year, or if it hasn’t been released yet (but they still know the themes), we do our scientific study of researching the past 2 years of what that magazine published. If we see consistency in the broad theme, then we make a prediction. For example, if Essence Magazine did “Women In Business” in October for the past 2 years, then we predict that to be the broad theme again for 2020.

However, the utmost important tool you have access to is the publication and submission date through 2020. You are able to determine where a magazine is in their production cycle so you can pitch them a timely story angle. There are SO MANY ideas you can pitch. Knowing the broad theme is helpful, but not the most important aspect to your pitching. Think big! Think broadly!

African-American Career World Magazine
